My second hands-on with Red Steel 2, this time in Tokyo, confirmed to me that Ubisoft’s first-person Wii sequel is the kind of Wii game that, back in 2006, I thought we would be playing more of.
It is a game that will be as fun as the motions needed to control it. If arm-swinging can’t be your thing — if you want to play your games stoically — then stay away.
The build of the game in Tokyo required space (Just like the potentially sternum-cracking Gamescom one). I needed room to …

Last night, the British Broadcasting Corporation aired Charlie Brooker‘s Gameswipe, a humorous (and informative!) look at the history and present of the video game, presented in the style of the broadcaster’s Newswipe and Screenwipe. And it was quite good.
The 50 minute one-off program was part obligatory primer, explaining genre types like platformer, shoot ‘em up and MMORPG, as well as giving ample screen time to retro titillating fare like Beat ‘Em And Eat ‘Em. But Gameswipe offered thoughtful insight into topics like the mainstream coverage of games, bad writing in …

Tokyo Game Show has a lot going for it, but perhaps the most interesting thing is it over-the-top cosplay. All shows pale in comparison to TGS when it comes to dressing up like a video game character.
Don’t believe me?
Check out Michael McWhertor’s three galleries of the stuff. Which is your favorite?

Heroine Kaine in the upcoming Cavia-developed, Square Enix-published RPG NeiR is a male-female character that gives players the best of both worlds. This latest screenshot is revealing a little too much, some claim.
Various Japanese sites are stating that this Kaine screen shows off the character’s areola. Embarrassing enlarged screenshot below.
Breasts in gaming have perked up since, well, there have been games. What makes this particular nipple slip different is that the character is both male and female — obviously having masculine and female traits. Is this a male areola …

According to “a trusted source” speaking with Joystiq, the production company run by former Disney boss Michael Eisner is looking at putting together a Mechwarrior movie. Which is a terrible idea.
Not because I hate Mechwarrior; far from it, I adore Battletech. It’s just, giant robot fighting on the big screen has already been perfected in 1990′s Robot Jox, and I’d hate to see some people blow a few million dollars in a futile attempt to better it.
The source also reports that a screenplay is being written by Michael Gordon (300, …

A study involving Unreal Tournament players, given a cash incentive for winning, found that gamers’ testosterone levels spiked noticeably after pwning complete strangers. When defeating friends, they produced even less testosterone than their vanquished teammates.
The study’s results imply that video games draw on physiological mechanisms in ways similar to warfare, where testosterone-fueled aggression provides a strong advantage. Researchers had tried studying it on subjects in sports, but the natural production of testosterone by physical exertion clouded the results of the study.
In this one, researchers pitted 14 three-player teams against one …

Two of my favorite series are making the jump to Xbox Live Arcade this week, as Bust A Move Live and Military Madness Nectaris make an appearance on the Xbox Live Marketplace starting Wednesday.
In addition to those two higher-definition classics, expect Football Genius – The Ultimate Quiz to become suddenly available to Xbox 360 owners. Before you start flexing your NFL and NCAA football skills, just a heads up that that’s the game that some of us call soccer. All titles will set you back 800 Microsoft Points.

Cave general manager Makato Asada has plans to bring the company’s frantic shoot-em-ups to a larger audience, one that spans beyond Japanese arcades and a few import enthusiasts. Maybe even to your PC.
While Cave’s releases, titles like DoDonPachi, Mushihime-sama and Death Smiles, are readily available in Japan, getting your hands on them in the West isn’t always easy. You’d typically need a Japanese PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360 to play them. But that’s going to change, first with the region-free release of Mushihime-sama Futari for the Xbox 360 this November.
Asada …

Polyphony Digital puts the power of one of the most acclaimed racing franchises of all time in the palm of your hand with Gran Turismo PSP.
Since the very first Gran Turismo title, Sony’s racing series has been lauded for three things: realism, graphics, and its massive stable of drivable vehicles. Now the game finally makes it to the PSP after being first teased around the time of the handheld’s launch in 2005. After years in development, has Polyphony managed to successfully transfer those three features onto the portable device?
